Influence of EMI and service-learning pedagogy on cognitive load and holistic education of undergraduates in e-learning curriculums

  Information courses often focus on technological applications, yet general education's information literacy emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and the human-centric nature of technological progress. Acknowledging technology as a human product, we aimed to enhance undergraduate interdisciplinary capabilities by incorporating English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) and service-learning pedagogy into the e-learning curriculum. This deviates from traditional information training methods. We evaluated 96 participants enrolled in a general education e-learning curriculum, grouping them based on the EMI and Chinese pedagogical methods employed. Post-training, 30 volunteers paired with e-learning partners to share English children’s stories with elementary students.

This collaboration evaluated e-learning effectiveness, facilitating modifications based on user feedback and interactions. We employed multiple assessment methods, including the satisfaction scale, information common competency scale, EMI effectiveness scale, cognitive load scale, and service-learning scale. Our study emphasized the dependent variable to evaluate student learning outcomes. Experimental results showed that cognitive load primarily influences EMI learning performance. Furthermore, the findings regarding service-learning demonstrated that digital work not only enhanced moral education and international perspectives in elementary school students but also expanded the creativity, social concern, interaction, communication and humanistic literacy of undergraduates. The findings indicate that incorporating EMI and service-learning into e-learning can help shape curricula that foster deeper learning and broader skill development.
